SIR LUKE FILDES, R.A. (1844-1927)

The Green Bodice

Oil on canvas: 56 x 46 cm. (22 x 18 in.)

Inscribed "bodice No. 12" to lower left, inscribed to verso "The Green Bodice", and with stencil 442 EM

Provenance:

This work, along with other paintings and property belonging to Sir Luke Fildes, was removed from his studio (11, Melbury Road, Kensington) and then sold at Christie's on the 24th June, 1927.  This painting (lot 16) was purchased by Lady Hartland for 18 guineas.

This portrait is unquestionably one of the most charming works by Fildes on the market; it is neither sugary nor grim, but belongs to a group of highly desirable late portraits he painted of fresh young ladies, which were unlaboured in their execution, and simple in composition, usually taking a slightly unfinished look for effect.  This approach allowed Fildes to show off his genuine skill as an artist by economically presenting the sitter’s character without recourse to embellishment.
